Theme 4 Reflection

Theme 4: Quantitative research

This theme workshop is rather different with previous seminar. It is interesting, because in this workshop we divided into 4 groups at the beginning and there is no rule to choose the member of the group. In the end the composition of the group is very stunning, because in my group only consist of 4 people. I do not know exactly what happen there, maybe people unconsciously choose the group based on relationship and familiarity with each other.
For the ice breaker, Mr. Olle Bälter show us a little game similar witch scribble, the main objective is to find a word based on character show in the picture. It is fun and at lease it can make us more relax at the beginning. After this session, he brief us that in this workshop he will give several questions regarding the topics and each of the group must answer the questions. Furthermore, he will give some credit to the group if this answer is not mentioned on another group, so to get this point we must have a unique answer in all groups. The winner of this workshop will rewarded by a can of biscuits. It is an interesting workshop we have this week.
In this session, I only remember several answers, and it was the result when we give all our answer to the lecturer.
The first question is what the advantage of qualitative research.
1.    Uncover information about individuals thought and experiences
2.    Rich in deep result and try to more understand people
3.    More flexible and adaptable
4.    There is no restriction in the number of participants
5.    Can get whole picture of the answer, because the participant can more active in this research and there is possible to participant to give more answer to the question
6.    Useful to use in complex situations
The second question is the advantage of quantitative research
1.    Easy to analyze, because the data usually in the form of number
2.    Easy to give the presentation of the data, because it can be the picture or formula that we use to examine the data
3.    The question and the answer provided is precise and easy to conduct a large number of surveys
4.    Time consuming and need higher cost
The third question is the disadvantages of using web questionnaire, compare to paper questionnaire
1.    Uneven distribution of respondent (age, education, etc) and must have experience to use a computer
2.    The higher initial cost to design and purchase the web questionnaire
3.    Lower answering percentage comparing to paper questionnaire
The fourth question is the advantages of using web questionnaire, compare to paper questionnaire
1.    It is flexible, we can use logic to control the flow of question
2.    Easier to distribute and lower distribution cost
3.    Easier to send and receive the survey questionnaire
4.    Environmental friendly
5.    Can be interactive and can support multimedia content
6.    The immediate result of the questionnaire, because we can use a built in statistical preprogramming
Also, in this session Mr. Olle Bälter show us an important thing when design the questionnaire. Because this questionnaire is the main focus when we gather the data regarding our hypothesis. It is better to test this question before we conduct the test, one of the methods is trying to read it out loud and try to answer by yourself. Furthermore, the best way to conduct a survey is to keep contact with the participant, for the example is to send invitation letter and reminder (mail or phone) to the participant.

  1. Hi Muhammed,
I thought this kind of seminar was very interesting and I think competition and interaction with other people in a different way encourage more engagement and creativeness. I think these kinds of sessions are a very good complement to the other discussions and it definitely enhances deeper learning. Don’t you think? I think I remember this seminar most.
